Bio Upbringing:

  • What were the family’s circumstances like? Rich? Poor? Scholarly? Isolated? Pious? Political?

Born and raised in a Vistani caravan, Brom grew up traveling with his clan. Like most Vistani clans this meant that they were always on the move, traveling from one town to another (and from plane to plane) hawking their wares & services. As a result Brom’s seen much of the world, as well as a fair amount of a few others. He has a very typical Vistani outlook on life: he is a child of fate, the wind blows and he follows it, trusting that he’ll end up where he needs to be.

  • How big is the family? How well does the character get along with his family? What nation is the character from? What region? How was the character educated? What were the character’s friends like? Did the character get into much trouble?

Brom’s clan is getting to be quite big. Last time he crossed paths with them they were beginning to talk about splitting the clan & caravans. If they have split by now he’s not sure which caravan his parents would have gone with. He’s not too worried about it though. All Vistani are family & carry news to each other. He loves his people dearly, anyone “of the blood” is family to him – if they happen to be someone he actually knows and all the better!

Brom was born during a full moon while his caravan was passing through the storm peaks. He had a peculiar birth mark that has grown as he’s aged. This mark (Mark of Storm) foreshadowed that he would develop innate magical abilities. Brom’s grandmother, matriarch of the clan, recognized this immediately and began to train him to harness his magic as soon as he started manifesting the power. Brom gained some mastery over his powers while he was young, but true control eluded him. When overcome with emotion he could accidentally lose control, allowing lightning and thunder to wreak havoc in the camp.

Like all Vistani children, Brom got into his fair share of trouble (with and without the help of the other Vistani youth). He never got into trouble so deep that he had to get bailed out by the tribe – something that has made him a little overconfident at times.

1. Write down a brief summary of the events of the phase.

Brom left on his Jaunt when he was 17, leaving his clan and sauntering off into the world to find something of value to bring back to the caravan. In that time he embodied the Vistani ideal – living by his wits and magic. The life of a vagabond adventurer suited him well, he’d enter a city or town – sell his services as a sorcerer and rain caller. All too often he’d be on the road again quickly because he’d spent too much time dallying with the local girls and needed to skip town before their fathers & brothers found out.

Brom lead this carefree life of passion and adventure for seven years, following the winds of fate. When he was 24 he was traveling through Lyrandar Barony when a pretty half-elf girl caught his eye. After trysting together for most of the summer her father, Baron Lyrander, discovered them. As reprisal for stealing his daughter’s virtue the Baron pressed Brom into service on one of his elemental galleons – an airship that enforced the trading routs for House Lyrander.

During his time on the galleons his power (and his dragonmark) grew greatly. His time as a privateer was also quite profitable (treasure) – he rose in ranks from simple deck hand (& cannon fodder) to become one of the ship’s windcallers, attaining the rank of Lightning Fury after proving himself in battle over and over. As an airship pirate Brom also found his way into a loose confederation of other scoundrels and misfits. That was 4 years ago, and Brom has recently been released from service. Brom is ready to take up the adventuring life again, and (in typical Vistani fashion) holds no ill will toward Baron Lyrander.

Write down the title and back cover blurb (a couple sentences at most) for your character’s fantasy novel. Don’t nail down all of the details of it yet.

New Blurbs:

During a stopover in a disreputable port of call Brom met the talented, dashing, formidable(?) wandering minstrel Asard Kiil (sp? tiefling bard and fellow rapscallion). That night, the pair performed at one of the larger inns in town: telling tales and singing songs of their daring do. During the performance they managed to catch the attention of a pair of twins who invited them back to their mansion for ‘private performances.’

The two pretty lasses were more than they seemed – it turns out the Brom and Asard were dallying with the mayor’s twin daughters. When the mayor found out, the two had to beat a hasty retreat over roof tops, through markets and all around the town. They managed to stay one step ahead of the guards all night and eventually made it back to Brom’s airship without major bodily harm, and with new stories of conquest & seduction to boot. The two scoundrels have crossed paths many times since – where ever they meet women quiver and bat their eyes, while jealous husbands and guarded fathers keep a close eye on the pair and prepare for trouble.

Somewhere along the way, after getting out of another close scrape, Brom and Asard managed to have the good fortune of gaining the employ of a burly half-orc named Hones Jim. Since this happy occasion Honest Jim has been playing lookout during their trysts and discouraging a lot of retaliation the other two probably deserve. All too often some fool makes the mistake of trying to take on Honest Jim (or even worse, sneak past him). In those cases Honest Jim smiles wide and prepares to indulge his orcish heritage with the liberal application of his crowbar. On those days Honest Jim thinks playing lookout for his two companions may just be worth it.
